On 7 March 2017, Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Auction raised a total of 1 516 250,00 Pounds Sterling (24 245 382,71 South African Rands) for Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the first major contemporary art museum in Africa.
Some of the world’s leading international contemporary artists had donated works to the auction house to benefit the museum’s endowment – ensuring its long-term sustainability. These artists included: El Anatsui, Roger Ballen, Yto Barrada, Peter Beard, Eamonn Doyle & Niall Sweeney, Frances Goodman, Kendell Geers, Antony Gormley, Rashid Johnson, Isaac Julien, Harland Miller, Athi-Patra Ruga, Yinka Shonibare MBE and Pascale Marthine Tayou.
Zeitz MOCAA expressed its gratitude over Twitter to all of the artists, galleries and collectors who were involved in making this fundraiser a success.
