Wine enthusiasts have long raved about the town of Stellenbosch, just outside of Cape Town. The last thing I was expecting on a recent visit to South Africa’s Western Cape province was to enjoy an arts primer to go along with visits to all those famous local vineyards.

With Stellenbosch less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town, everything from early 20th century Afrikaans landscape artists, and bold early-century women painters, to contemporary township artists can all be taken in on an easy day trip from the Mother City.
The streets of Stellenbosch are an arts hotbed themselves, filled with public works of all scales and styles, from the whimsical to the political. Just last fall, a brilliant piece by local artist Strijdom van der Merwe was erected in front of the lovely Town Hall and Council Chambers on Plein Street.
