The Cape Gallery is pleased to present The Gold That Binds Us, the artist’s debut solo. An exhibition of large scale oil paintings and smaller studies exploring Van Stolk’s intuitive response to abstraction within the figure and the landscape. She takes us on a journey into feeling and connecting to the human form, allowing the impact of colour to embrace the figure and landscape. “The question of how to portray energy within a figure and that deep connection with the subject matter, without being literal, is what has guided my explorations in this body of works. My intuitive use of gold has led me to Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. It embraces the flawed or imperfect, making it beautiful for just that. It carries connotations of fully existing within the moment, of non-attachment amid changing conditions. A physical expression of the spirit. Think of an image of a bowl, completely open, yet contained. This analogy explains what I aim to achieve within my work. Embracing the story, the picture book, the golden thread running through my work and my life. “ – Helen van Stolk This exhibition is intended to share the artists’ studio world with others. She has given herself the luxury of time and a non-judgemental private space to create. This has allowed her complete freedom of expression, taking her work to a new level.
