Noncedo Charmaine | To Love or Not to Love: a street view:
02 February (17:00) – 17 March 2017
at Amplify Studio, Loop Street, Cape Town
Amplify Studio is an exciting new multi-faceted photography concept in Cape Town’s Central Business District on Loop St.
At its core is an Artist in Residence Program (Amplify AIR) that supports up to 12 aspiring South African photographers each year.
The program aims to add to the cultural scene in the South African photographic arena by mentoring, training and showcasing local talent. The free initiative offers support including access to tools of choice, a fully kitted studio, a place to work and think and mentorship by industry experts.
The first completed residency exhibition: that of photographic artist Noncedo Charmaine Mathibela, will be celebrated in the Amplify Gallery over 6 weeks through February, the month of Love. The body of work, titled, “To Love or Not to Love: a street view” is Noncedo Charmaine’s inaugural public showcase revealing her final artworks, impetus and processes, mentored by Jenny Altschuler, acclaimed South African photographer, artist and professional mentor.
The series explores and documents street couples and how they experience love in their daily lives. … In her own words, “I have been working on mending the relationship with my father, an invisible figure, for much of my life. I have had to deal with fears of intimacy; constant suspicion of disloyalty; an inability to grasp monogamy and the difficulties associated with his absence. Following couples, who live on the street and are able to stay together and commit to each other has been part of my process…Even under strains of ‘hard living’, temporary shelter and ‘below-the-breadline’ income, their continued commitment inspires me to concede that no matter the challenge loving is possible.”
The Amplify Residency has encouraged Noncedo Charmaine to think and work harder and achieve more in three months than most photographers do in a year. The program is not a free for all. It is a serious opportunity to shine; to be supported and mentored while working really hard.
Join Noncedo to be inspired by her journey and her solid work at Amplify Studio opening on “First Thursdays” February 2nd, 2017, running through to March 17th whereupon it will travel nationally.
