Art on another level


An apartment on the 13th floor in the heart of the Joburg CBD: the perfect spot for an art gallery. That’s what Dutch artist Mathijs Lieshout thought when he first saw the flat he now lives in.

Lieshout never ran a gallery before. For the past 15 years he has been making a living as an artist, building quite enormous nest-like wood constructions. Yet in South Africa he was introduced to art talent, plenty of them, from Alexandra, Soweto, the inner City and Mamelodi. Artists he found too inspiring to be lacking a gallery.
