Excitement is building for Aspire Art’s much-anticipated final auction for 2022 in Johannesburg, taking place on Wednesday, 30 November at 6pm.

 

Irma Stern, Anemones, 1938. Estimates: R5,000,000 – R7,000,000

The focussed collection of 84 lots showcases highlights by South African modern masters, including magnificent still-life compositions by Irma Stern, a grand Alexis Preller abstract from 1966, an early JH Pierneef landscape and superb carved wood-panels by the formidable Cecil Skotnes. Also featured are rare, early works by Dumile Feni alongside other important South African Black Modernists like Gerard Sekoto, Lucky Sibiya and Ephraim Ngatane.

The striking selection of African contemporary art and photography includes works by the celebrated David Koloane and Sam Nhlengethwa alongside the vibrant paintings of Mustafa Maluka and Blessing Ngobeni, the conceptual works of Walter Oltmann and Willem Boshoff, and the cinematic images of Kudzanai Chiurai and Mikhael Subotzsky. A highlight is two captivating portraits by Zanele Muholi, the most recent additions to the artist’s ongoing and renowned Somnyama Ngonyama series, which are presented next to a large bronze sculpture by Muholi, the first of this new body of work to ever be offered on auction.

The sale also features a special selection of artworks by William Kentridge in celebration of his major retrospective exhibition currently on show at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. One of the most celebrated and influential living artists today, this is one of the strongest, unique and high-quality Kentridge collections to come to market. Spanning the artist’s career and showcasing the many mediums in which he works, the collection features important and signature charcoal drawings alongside collages, a tapestry, prints and sculptures.
