The lockdown has affected many businesses in different ways and the fall out will still be felt for a long time to come. Fortunately online auctions are something that collectors have become accustomed to, so the switch from a live auction to an online version due to the lockdown was a relatively smooth transition.

Our last live Johannesburg sale which would have taken place at the end of March became an online auction which ran over a two week period ending at 9pm on Easter Sunday. The results were remarkable, with some fantastic prices achieved.

Perhaps it was because during lockdown more people are spending time browsing on the internet, perhaps it was because of what was on offer, we can speculate as to the reasons for the success of the sale, but R6.1m including buyer’s premium is the most successful online sale we have ever had in the short time Stephan Welz and Co have held online auctions.

Our Golden Thread competition elicited a number of entries with the prize going to Grant van Lelyveld in Johannesburg. We are particularly grateful to all who browsed, bid or entered the competition; we will be bringing another online auction before too long.

A few of the highlights are listed below, but we are still actively consigning for our upcoming Cape Town and Johannesburg auctions.

For a valuation the process is quite simple, take a picture, upload it to our website or just email us on info@swelco.co.za.
