850 portraits from all over South Africa were entered into the biennial National Portrait Award Competition, now in its sixth year. These entries were whittled down to 100 artworks by an adjudication panel consisting of esteemed educators and artists Elizabeth Gunter, Paul Emsley and Rose Kirumira. From these works, 60 were selected to be shown at the Spier Arts Trust Union House in an exhibition titled ‘PORTRAIT 100’ – forming, with the Top 40 finalists (to be exhibited at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville), a carefully curated collection of some of the best contemporary portraiture South Africa has to offer.
