“Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind”  (Nathaniel Hawthorne)
The Association of Arts Pretoria proudly announces a posthumous Lance Friedlande exhibition from 13 April to 4 May 2024.

Lance Friedlande was born in Johannesburg in 1949 and went to school at King Edward VII School.  He obtained degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand.  He had solo exhibitions at amongst others the Voir, Gordart and Fried Contemporary galleries.  He exhibited with Gordon Froud at North-West University, Oliewenhuis and the Pretoria Art Museum.  His work can be found in overseas and local collections. He painted in his Pretoria studio until a few months before his death in December 2022.

Nathaniel Hawthorne once proclaimed:  “Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind.”  Lance Friedlande’s paintings examine the human condition through a series of portraits, landscapes and environments with figures and animals.  He is continuously seeking the element of truth and a moment of purity in his work.  His processes and results label him loosely as a neo-romantic expressionist.

Louisemarie Combrink remarked during his exhibition at North-West University Potchefstroom campus with Gordon Froud (20 May 2010): “The work of this artist can be described as neo-romantic. We enter, here, poetic visions of dislocated figures in apocalyptic landscape settings…”

His friend and fellow artist Greg Kerr stated: “Lance and I were in the same art-enchanted class at school where we soaked up all kinds of scraps of modernism – painting and drawing and printing – with great energy and adolescent chutzpah.  Lance was a demon for information and insights.”

Friedlande had a robust approach to paint with a direct and emblematic nature of imagery.  His work is anecdotal but in an enigmatic and tangential way.  It demands empathy but does not tolerate explanation.

The exhibition will be opened by Gordon Froud on Saturday, 13 April 2024 at 11:00.  Do not let the opportunity slip by to view the works at the Association of Arts Pretoria between 13 April and 4 May 2024.
