Asisebenze Art Atelier (AAA) has been breaking moulds and preconceived notions with its ‘Deconstructed’ series of solo exhibitions that showcase the talent of its artists. The month-long solo shows invite artists to push the limits of their creativity, while art lovers are invited to celebrate these works through a series of regular events.
“What we’re trying to do with this show is break down barriers,” says Nolan Stevens, Asisebenze’s curator. “For the artists, this means stepping out of their comfort zones by experimenting with new mediums and modes of art making. Effectively, we’re encouraging them to deconstruct their usual practices. Going hand-in-hand with this journey of exploration, we’re opening our doors to art lovers through a series of events throughout each month. From exclusive viewings as well as educational tours, to sip ‘n paint events and panel discussions, we’re catering to every level of art enthusiast. The message we want to convey is that the best way to explore local art is to come see local art.”
The 20+ artists who live and create in their studios at 28 Plein Street draw inspiration from their lived experience in the heart of the city. The week-day bustle of the taxi ranks competes with street traders and the constant throng of commuters who experience a Johannesburg that remains foreign to many. These multiple layers of society that inhabit the city are reflected in the works of AAA’s artists, such as Sifiso Mkhabela whose Concrete Cocoon solo show ran until end-May. His works for this show explore South African socio-political realities and marks a shift from the sculptures for which he is traditionally known.
“This exhibition will be about life in this city and how it is being at the beginning of your journey to that point where you finally see a way through the hardship and difficulty,” Sifiso says. “Basically, I would like this exhibition to give you a sense of no matter how hard things are, no matter how dark you think your tunnel is, there’s always light at the end and you can always bounce back from anything.”
Art enthusiasts are invited to explore the works on display every month through events ranging from an open day on the first Sunday of the month to an interactive panel discussion with the artist. One of the most popular events is a sip ‘n paint session in which the artist joins visitors in creating art simply for the sake of creating art. This Sunday event is a fun way to spend time with friends and loved ones with an inner-city vibe.
A new initiative involves inviting schools, colleges and varsity art classes for a guided tour of the exhibition.
