Dolly commands millions

A painting by the celebrated Dutch artist Kees van Dongen of his much loved daughter Dolly which was painted in 1909, was the most expensive painting sold by Strauss & Co at their auction in Johannesburg last night. The painting realised  R5 684 000 which well exceeded the pre-sale estimate. The sale totalled R48 million with five lots selling over R1 million and three lots over R3 million. The success of the sale once again proves the strength of the South African art market.

The sell-through rate both by lot and by value exceeded 82% firmly establishing Strauss & Co as the most successful auction house for South African art.
