First Thursdays cause art-jam in Jozi

The last time an art exhibition opening caused a traffic jam in Joburg was in 2007 when Simon Njami’s famous Africa Remix opened at the Joburg Art Gallery.

Admittedly, some of the activity surrounding the gallery that Sunday was partly due to taxis depositing sojourners back in the city in time for the next working week.

In Braamfontein last Thursday evening, when Juta and De Beer streets were filled with stationary vehicles, art was undoubtedly the main culprit for the chaos.

Not just one art exhibition opening was to blame but eight, all engineered to mark the city’s inaugural First Thursdays. This is a concept imported from Cape Town where the first Thursday of every month gallerists, restaurteurs and shop owners keep their doors open until late, using the occasion to present something new…
