Graffiti art brings ‘new life’ to Durban’s Florida road

Graffiti often gets a bad rap. However, a Durban street artist is using his creative skills to give one of the country’s famous streets a facelift. Durban’s Florida Road is steeped in history. It’s one of Durban’s top day and night spots. Now, it’s being rejuvenated. Armed with cans of paint, Shaun Oakley gets stuck in. “It’s based on the old elephant track that used to run from Mitchell Park down to the race course. They use to walk the elephants down and there was also an old tram that used to run down this road back in the day, that’s why we got the tram in the background and instead of just showing the elephants, in terms of portraits and faces, we thought we’ll just make a silhouette in the tram, something different.”… Read more
