Europe is in the midst of the biggest refugee crisis in almost 20 years, driven in part by a brutal civil war in Syria. But a huge number of refugees are fleeing from a far less well-known African country — Eritrea. Eritreans make up the third-largest group of refugees crossing the Mediterranean, according to UN statistics, and an estimated 360,000 people have fled out of a population of 6.3 million — over 5%. Last year Eritrean refugees made up the second-highest number of applicants for asylum in Britain, with around 800 more Eritreans applying than Syrians… Read more
