On Saturday 5 April ’25 at 11h00, two new exhibitions, unified by their focus on tactility, will open at the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery + Clay Museum in Durbanville.
The gallery welcomes back ceramist Antoinette du Plessis, who will be presenting a new selection of bold and expressive ceramics in her solo exhibition, titled ‘Random Variables’. From a career in textile design, to now having a resounding dedication to ceramics and sculptural work, she finds herself reimagining the African urban landscape through texture, colour and visual form. She states that there are divergent aspects to her work: nature drawings, caricatures, haphazard doodling, colourful and expressive mark-making – all of which are improbably deposited onto formal clay shapes. Since the start of her ceramic career, her works have undergone a unique evolution process, becoming a combination of refined technicality and an innate sense of intuitiveness.
‘Random Variables’ will open alongside a group exhibition titled ‘Pulp Fiction’. In this exhibition, artists explore the narrative potential of paper, whether used as medium, or support. Participating artists include: Alta Botha, Caitlin Mkhasibe, Catherine Holtzhausen, Craig Muller, Georgine Oosthuizen, Hannes Koegelenberg, Hermie Delport, Ilse Nieman, Juanita Oosthuizen, Khumo Ramaila, Lebogang Mabusela, Ocean Steenkamp, and Ruan Huisamen.
