The Ephemeral Nature of Things

art.b Gallery in Bellville proudly announces the opening of The Ephemeral Nature of Things, an exhibition by Laurette de Jager. Opening on April 5, 2025, this exhibition is the first in a series of exhibitions as part of De Jager's PhD in Art through the University of South Africa. Dr. Gregory Kerr, her longtime mentor, will open the exhibition.

Laurette de Jager holds a Master of Arts in Visual Arts (Unisa) cum laude, and diplomas in Jewellery Design and Manufacture (CPUT). Currently pursuing her PhD, De Jager balances creating art, lecturing, and curating exhibitions in Cape Town's Northern suburbs. Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions and is part of private collections locally and internationally. De Jager describes the objective of her work as: finding new ways to exist in a dying world.

The Ephemeral Nature of Things is an artistic documentation of De Jager's practice as a coping mechanism for solastalgia and climate grief, expressed through photomontage and painting. Solastalgia, a term coined by Glen Albrecht, describes the distress from environmental changes, leading to feelings of loss and powerlessness. De Jager's work is deeply influenced by solastalgia, focusing on three specific locations but reflecting broader environmental concerns.

The Ephemeral Nature of Things encapsulates De Jager's journey of transformation through her art. It emphasizes the deep-seated connection between humans and the natural world, reflecting on the delicate balance and the beauty found within the cycles of life and decay. By engaging with the earth and integrating its essence into her work, De Jager invites viewers to contemplate their relationship with the environment and the impact of their actions.
