Ten minutes into the appealingly titled Who’s Afraid of Conceptual Art? (BBC Four), nice-guy art historian Dr James Fox found himself gazing at a 1961 work by Italian artist Piero Manzoni. A small sealed tin containing 30 gms of the artist’s own excrement, which sold at Christie’s last year for £182,500. “If you thought conceptual art was crap, here’s your proof,” said Fox, entertainingly. “I suspect Manzoni is making fun of us… part of me feels a bit of an idiot for coming all this way to see what is, essentially, a s–t on a plinth.”… Read more
